LOCATION:
Our Bird boxes should be fixed a minimum of 2m off the ground, either on a house wall or a tree, in a quieter part of your garden and away from preditors. It is advised that the opening of the box faces north or east as this avoids the worst of the weather and helps to prevent the box and its contents becoming overheated in the sunny weather.
PROTECTION:
Placing rose cuttings or any thorny material on the roof of the box as this should discourage cats. If the box is mounted on a tree ensure that there are no overhanging branches for a cat to gain easy access to the house.
HYGIENE:
After the breeding season (March - August) clean your bird house by removing any nesting materials then using hot water, scrub the box thoroughly. To open the nest box, remove the screw located in the roof panel. Remember to wear gloves when cleaning or removing the bird house and wash your hands afterwards.
The bird boxes are a rustic style so will have a distressed look. This does not detract from their overall look and purpose. Wood is a natural material so each box will have different knots, textures etc.
